The Big Lobster

The Big Lobster, as the name suggests, is a popular sculpture of a huge red coloured spiny lobster located near the entrance of Kingston SE, a renowned fishing town of South Australia.

This beautiful Big Lobster has also become a popular tourist attraction of Kingston SE and its neighbourhood. The sculpture of Big Lobster is locally known as “Larry”.

Designed by an impressive artist Paul Kelly, this sculpture of a spiny lobster was actually built for two private clients known as Ian Backler and Rob Moyse with an intention to attract more visitors to the restaurant and the visitor centre near to the Big Lobster sculpture. The sculpture was opened on 15th December 1979 after a six month long construction.

This 17 metres tall fiberglass and steel made Big Lobster has become an iconic spot in the town of Kingston SE, South Australia. Presently, the Big Lobster is ranked amongst the impressive Australian Big Things to see list.

At the Big Lobster, you will find a number of displays of local produce, wine, beer, rock lobster and an array of souvenirs. Guests can also dine in at the restaurant to have a scrumptious lobster meal and can buy some cooked lobster. The Big Lobster is an award-winning restaurant that serves the finest seafood in town.

At the visitor’s centre, guests can seek for tourist information in case they would like to explore the town further. Along with the delectable lobster lunch, you can try the local South East wines from the famous wineries in Coonawarra and Penola.
